Ira S. Hofer, MD is a practicing anesthesiologist and clinical informaticist at The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the founder and President of Extrico Health. Dr. Hofer has been working in big data analytics with electronic health record (EHR) data for over 15 years. He has held a variety of roles at multiple world-renowned hospital systems building and deploying AI (Artificial Intelligence) models and overseeing analytics for system wide and departmental programs. He currently holds joint appointments in Anesthesiology, Medicine at the Charles Bronfman Institute for Personalized Medicine and is the inaugural director of the Rapid Randomized Trial Unit in the CBIM which is focused on deploying AI models into clinical care using study designs to measure efficacy.

Dr. Hofer’s research interests involve leveraging the data from the EHR to understand, quantify and mitigate risk in the perioperative period. His work includes some of the first papers to apply machine learning techniques for perioperative outcome prediction and has been featured on the cover of both Anesthesiology and Anesthesia & Analgesia. Ira has a K01 from the National Heart Lung and Blood institute, and funding from the NIA funded IMPACT Collaboratory for a pragmatic trial to reduce postoperative delirium using an AI driven decision support model. He also serves as an associate editor for Anesthesia & Analgesia. His current research focus is on creating featurization techniques to incorporate a wide range of EHR data into machine learning models to improve discrimination and calibration and establishing multi-center perioperative collaboratives to build more generalizable models and enhance health equity.

This includes operating and management experience in several venture capital-funded technology startups and middle market companies. John has served multiple stints in the C-Suite, including several times as CEO, with deep experience taking companies from their earliest stages through exit. He has taken four companies through an IPO, reverse merged an entity in to a $300 million SPAC, and led one of the largest secondary offerings ever done on NASDAQ. He has raised over $2.5 billion in capital for private and public companies and has negotiated hundreds of millions of dollars in new business. John’s addition to Extrico brings the strategic planning, fundraising, and team building experience necessary in scaling the company. John graduated Summa Cum Laude from Boston College and went on to earn his MBA from Harvard Business School where he was awarded multiple fellowships.

Known for his creative thinking and enthusiasm, Dr. Gabel effectively bridges medical concepts and technical applications. Dr. Gabel's expertise in machine learning and clinical decision systems has significantly improved clinical workflows and patient outcomes within UCLA and other collaborating institutions. Leveraging his administrative background, he has successfully integrated technology and data analytics into useful strategic planning and operational efficiency for the health system.

With numerous peer-reviewed publications, his research in predictive analytics and advanced clinical decision support systems has greatly impacted healthcare technology. As Director of the Division of Bioinformatics and Analytics, he currently leads a team that supports clinical trials, financial reporting for multiple departments, tableau visualizations, electronic health record optimizations, artificial intelligence, quality reporting, and other research endeavors for the health center. Additionally, Dr. Gabel has been an invited speaker at various conferences and institutions, sharing his expertise in health care technology and clinical informatics.

As Director of the Clinical Data Science Team, he has successfully overseen the implementation of a real-time multi-modal streaming data science pipeline. This pipeline is used to deploy operational machine learning models at the point of care. The Data Science team recently won the prestigious Hearst Health Prize for the machine learning application called NutriScan AI that facilitates faster identification and treatment of malnutrition in hospitalized patients.

He serves as a senior associate dean, tenured professor of anesthesiology, and director of the “Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment” at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Additionally, he holds a professorship in anesthesiology and health policy at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Dr. Ehrenfeld divides his time among clinical practice, teaching, research, and directing a $560-million statewide health philanthropy. He also holds an appointment as an adjunct professor of surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, serves as a consultant to the World Health Organization Digital Health Technical Advisory Group, and has served as a special advisor to the 20th U.S. Surgeon General.

Since his first year of medical school, Dr. Ehrenfeld has been committed to advancing the interests of patients, medical practices, and the field of medicine through advocacy, teaching, and research.
